About the artist and the edition In 2017, artist Anne Imhof from Frankfurt is honoured with the Golden Lion for her contribution to the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. She has been world-renowned ever since. Her work for Venice: a nearly five-hour-long performance act titled “Faust”: Dogs placed in a kennel before the German Pavilion guard roughly 40 young men and women, all of them enclosed behind bullet-proof glass inside the imposing building. For Imhof, it was all about power dynamics and violence. It has indeed been a rapidly rising career for the former Städel Student. In 2015, only three years after completing her studies, she wins the renowned “Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst”. One year later, she presents her much-discussed series of works “Angst” (“Fear”). Imhof staged this “opera in three acts” at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, at the Kunsthalle Basel and as part of the Biennale de Montréal. She strikes right in the big-city-dwelling heart of Generation Y: The performers, engulfed in vintage looks, embellished with hawks on their shoulders, drink Pepsi Light and smoke e-cigarettes.
